Email marketing for small businesses: where to start

Your email list is the one marketing channel you own outright. A few simple, useful emails can bring in repeat work and referrals for very little cost.

Build the list properly

Collect email addresses with consent: on your website, at checkout, after a job, or with a useful download. In New Zealand the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act requires consent, clear details of who the email is from, and a working unsubscribe link in every commercial email.

Set up a welcome email first

When someone joins, send a short welcome: who you are, what they can expect from you, and one helpful next step. It's usually the most-read email you'll ever send.

Automate the moments that matter

A few automatic emails do a lot of quiet work: a follow-up after an enquiry, a thank-you and review request after a job, and a reminder when a service is due again. Set them up once and they run in the background.

Send something useful regularly

A monthly or seasonal email with practical tips, a recent project and one clear offer keeps you front of mind without wearing people out. Useful beats salesy.

Watch the right numbers

Open rates are less reliable than they used to be. Focus on clicks, replies, bookings and the work that comes from each email, and keep the list clean by removing addresses that bounce.
