Locally owned Taupō gym · Google Ads · Local fitness · Taupō
Five times the free‑trial sign-ups, at less than half the cost.
A locally owned Taupō gym was running Google Ads in one of the most competitive categories in town. The ads were getting seen, but each free‑trial sign-up was costing $96 and only about one a week was coming through.

What we found
Being seen wasn't enough. The campaign needed to reach people actively looking for a gym, including rural locals who come into Taupō for work, and give them one clear next step: a free‑trial pass.
The strategy
Connect high-intent search with the right local area and a matching free‑trial page. Launch one campaign at a time so we could see what was driving sign-ups before adding the next.
What we implemented
- A new Search campaign using phrase and exact match keywords for people actively looking for a gym
- Taupō targeting plus a 10km radius to include rural locals
- Every click sent to the free‑trial pass page, aligning the ad with the landing page
- A staged campaign launch to identify what was driving sign-ups
What changed
Cost per free‑trial sign-up fell from $96 to $42 — a 56% reduction. Weekly sign-ups increased from about one to about five.
The bigger picture
More members through the door starts with the right search, the right suburb and the right landing page.
